Scandinavian Culture at Scandi
As the name of the school suggests, Scandinavian culture is a big part of our identity and we want to share that with all of the children as well as the parents. School-wide, every year we celebrate three major traditions which are Midsummer, Easter and Lucia.
-
Midsummer
Midsummer at Scandi is a week of our summer camp where the children are immersed in the tradition of celebrating the start of summer. The children, teachers and parents alike spend the week picking and collecting flowers and greenery, and together we make head wreaths, dress the midsummer pole, prepare Scandinavian flags and food for our picnic at the end of the week.
-
Easter
We celebrate Scandinavian Easter filled with rosy cheeked Easter witches and a pot luck picnic with all of our families in Hamilton Park. While honoring our Scandinavian roots, we also infuse this celebration with a traditional American Easter Egg Hunt, filled with organic, vegan and non-edible treats for the children.
-
Lucia
Lucia at Scandi is one of our most treasured celebrations of the year. We invite not only our families, but also our neighborhood schools and community to join us for this very special day. Lucia is a celebration of light during our darkest month, and the children practice the songs for months, in addition to baking traditional Scandinavian treats.
Multicultural Celebrations at Scandi
Many of our families here at Scandi are from multicultural and multilingual communities outside of Scandinavia. If a family has a special cultural tradition they want to share with the school as a whole or their child’s class, we welcome such collaboration and love to honor all of our children’s traditions and rituals from home.
