About Learning Stories at Scandi
The Learning Stories is a holistic approach to learning assessment. First developed in New Zealand as a part of Te Whāriki early childhood curriculum, it is a form of observation and documentation that is written in a narrative story format by a teacher, often directly to the child.
This approach emphasizes the value of noticing, observing, reflecting on, and responding to children’s growth and development as they interact with the world. Everyone, including the child, is invited to participate in this invaluable journey of learning reflection.
What is a Learning Story?
A documentation that is guided through the inquiry of a teacher to focus on small moments of learning for each individual child.
An artifact of our image of the child as capable and curious, collaborator and co-architect of their own learning.
An opportunity to connect with families on a deeper level and bring them into the documentation process, expanding our knowledge of the child.
A practice of being a reflective teacher, to think extensively about our observations and how they inform our practice.
